As a passionate children's book illustrator, being part of this project has been about much more than creating beautiful artwork for Fatima. It has been an opportunity to help bring a deeply personal family story to life through warm, engaging illustrations that children can truly connect with.

A Children’s Book Inspired by a Unique Way of Seeing the World

My Busy Builder Brain was written by a Kanata mother after her son, Eli, was diagnosed with autism. His fascination with construction vehicles and his distinctive way of thinking became the inspiration for a story designed to highlight neurodiversity in children's books in a positive and approachable way.

Rather than presenting differences as something that needs to be "fixed," the book celebrates the qualities that make every child unique. Through its story and illustrations, young readers are encouraged to understand that people can have different interests, ways of communicating, strengths, and ways of experiencing the world.

Bringing Neurodiversity to Life Through Illustration

The September 2026 feature in Ottawa Lookout explored the heartfelt story behind My Busy Builder Brain and the real family experience that inspired it.

For Fatima Kaleem Illustrations, seeing the artwork featured alongside the story was a particularly meaningful part of the experience.

Looking Toward Future Stories

The story doesn't end with My Busy Builder Brain. The author is already planning additional books, including My Brother Sam, which will explore the unique experience of having a neurodivergent sibling.
